Our tour commenced in Chiangmai “The Rose of the North”, where we selected three of the best courses in the area.
CHIANGMAI HIGHLANDS (Round 1)
The opening game was held on the picturesque Chiangmai Highlands with its open fairways and undulating greens. Good scores came from Mike Wilde & Hans Finsterer both with 34 points. Just ahead of them with a fine 36 point total was Sheree Dove. But the winner of the day and early championship leader was Austrian Gerhard Cerny who finished with 37 points.
MAE JO (Round 2)
Day two and the tricky Mae Jo opened its doors to our competitors. Scores were much lower than the first day although conditions were perfect for golf. 6 handicapper Sheree Dove came out ahead of the field with a creditable 34 points. Sheree was followed by Mike Wilde on 33 points, with Dennis Martindale & Ken Williams both on 30 points.
ROYAL CHIANGMAI (Round 3)
Royal Chiangmai looked in great condition for round three of the competition but high scores were not the order of the day. It looked like Sheree Dove had won again with a 32 point total. However Hans Finsterer had other ideas, finishing in the final group with a magnificent 36 points and winning the day. But Sheree lead the field at the halfway stage with 102 points.
SANTIBURI (Round 4)
The players then travelled north via a leisurely boat trip, a visit to a “Hilltribe Village” and on to their Chiangrai Hotel. The following morning Santiburi, a course that has been ranked as Thailand’s number for one many years looked majestic, with the early morning mist hovering above the fairways. Today the scores would not disappoint as Mike Wilde playing of a 5 handicap scored an amazing 40 points to take the spoils. Mike was followed by Sheree Dove, with a great 38 points and Stuart Macfarlane (Last year’s Champion) on 35 points.
WATERFORD VALLEY (Round 5)
We then travelled 50 minutes from our Chiangrai Hotel to the pretty Waterford Valley golf course. Great scores for the second day running, Mike Wilde out in front again with 39 points, followed by Oskar Rabitz 35 points, Hans Finsterer 34 points, Sheree Dove 33 points & Dennis Martindale 32 points. Oskar came out the winner as the competition rules state that you can only win one individual day.
ROYAL CHIANGMAI (Final Round)
We returned to Royal Chiangmai for our final round, with three players still with a chance of the championship. Mike Wilde, Sheree Dove & Hans Finisterer all scored 33 points. Leaving Mike with a winning four round two under par total of 146 points. Sheree was runner-up on 141 points and Austrian Hans Finsterer third with 137 points. Fellow Austrian Oskar Rabitz came in with a respectable 31 points. However 11 handicap Stuart Macfarlane was close behind to win the day’s prize.
Congratulations to Mike on a record breaking performance, Sheree for setting the pace in the early rounds & Hans for putting up a great fight right till the end. We hope to see all of the players again on one of our competition holidays.
